AS A COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

I use creative strategy to solve business objectives with expert writing and design. Reach out for a meaningful conversation to suss out what you need, and foster a lasting relationship.

MY CAREER BEGAN

as a freelance writer and designer of TV commercial pitch decks. I learned to be an expert in ghost writing voice and tone, and explicating creative visions to win the business for ESPN, Electronic Arts, Activision, Food Lion, Pizza Hut et al.

I've written copy for Naked Juice at Goodness Mfg., and maintained the business for multiple clients at Echo Factory. By developing my skills I refreshed brands for startups My Spare Cell and MopProp. I delivered creative strategy and branding for Hack for Los Angeles, both internally and on LA DoT's Transportation Data Management webtool. I then wrote, animated and composed music on social content for Spoon & Pork restaurant. This all made me ready for the next step in my career journey. However, it wasn’t immediately clear what that was. I had done quite a bit of writing, some branding, even got some composing published. I still wasn’t quite clear on how to position myself, and where exactly I wanted to go.

At NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory

The moonshot of all moonshots was thinking about working at JPL. I thought how cool it would be to work with the fabled Studio, a group of creative strategists who create public mission artwork to communicate the value of JPL’s work, and they help scientists with visualizing mission formulation. I cold-emailed a USC alum and after a year of staying in touch, I was referred as a generalist writer and designer. The pieces of work I had cobbled together clicked into place and I’ve been at JPL for just over four years.

I've written communications plans, built comms programs and formulated comms strategy, handled change management and delivered crisis comms for JPL Travel in response to Executive Orders and Payroll's need to handle a new timekeeping system. I kept up branding work, and rebranded my Division after a 7-year interim, and have taken on creative direction of Lab-wide, multi-group stakeholder campaigns around Fiscal Year End and Payroll messaging. I also refreshed Travel’s branding with a new logo, a sonic logo, and general graphic elements and consistent color palette, contributing to three record newsletters and continuous upward projection over three years.

A project I'm extremely proud of was indepedently directing, scoring, and animating an in-depth video for JPL Archives which had 1M / 12K reach on Instagram and LinkedIn, and over 5,700 interactions. Finally, I also served as a creative strategist in StoryLab’s Sea Level Rise workshops developing impactful storytelling with Project Scientists targeting Congressional leadership, property insurers, big agriculture and the public. After years of networking, providing value, listening and asking good questions, I had done it. I worked with some of my heroes.

And my career development continues as I complete a Masters of Design program at Art Center College of Design in Brand Design and Strategy. I have been able to truly crystalize my positioning, and know that I want to work for public good.
